Farming for a Healthier Future

For families living near forests in Indonesia, putting food on the table can be a daily challenge. Thanks to your support, these communities are learning to farm in ways that not only feed their families, but also protect their environment.

We’re excited to share some amazing results from recent efforts!

A Bountiful Harvest

The latest crops from the demonstration plots (dem-plots) in Sumatra were a huge success. After overcoming initial challenges, the farmers replanted, and the results are inspiring:

  • 8.5 kg of mustard greens
  • 442 bunches of water spinach
  • 286 kg of red chilies

This harvest generated IDR 5,728,600 (USD $352) in extra income for local families—a life-changing boost for these communities.

Organic Farming

In October 2024, 15 farmers from three villages joined a training session led by agricultural expert Mr. Sumaliadi. They tackled common issues like yellowing leaves, leaf curling, and white root fungus. Farmers also learned how to grow Trichoderma, a helpful fungus that improves soil health and fights diseases.

By December, the focus shifted to making natural pesticides and liquid organic fertilisers. Ten farmers joined this hands-on training to learn sustainable ways to protect their crops and improve their soil.

Natural Solutions

17 farmers from three villages have started using liquid organic fertilisers for crops like rice, red chilies, eggplant, and water spinach. These efforts are vital as farmers face challenges like harsh weather and pest infestations. One farmer replaced his struggling rice crop with white beans, ensuring his family still had food and income.

Boosting Income

Between July and December 2024, 106 families received support to grow organic vegetables in their yards. These efforts provided additional income to families, making a big difference in their daily lives.

Cocoa and Pepper Farming

In October, three cocoa farmers and one pepper farmer took part in specialised training to improve their skills. They learned techniques like pruning cocoa branches to boost productivity and care for their crops.

A Brighter, Healthier Future

Thanks to your support, forest-edge communities are achieving incredible milestones. By farming organically, they’re growing healthier crops, improving their soil, and securing a brighter future for their families.

Your generosity is ensuring these communities never go hungry again. Thank you for making this possible! 💚🌿
