If you haven’t already heard of the Power of Mama, you’re in for a treat!
This amazing women-led group, Power of Mama (PoM for short), is made up of 92 members from six different villages in West Kalimantan, Borneo.
PoM’s number one goal is forest fire-prevention, protecting wildlife and their natural habitats.
But PoM is so much more than fire-prevention. They are champions of wildlife conservation, role models and educators, and they are transforming attitudes towards the role of women.
In addition to their primary activities of patrolling and monitoring fire-prone areas, these women have been participating in community engagement initiatives, helping to raise awareness on the sustainable use of natural resources.
From April - June this year, PoM conducted 404 outreach activities, engaging 589 landowners, farmers and members of the community. This work is vital in sharing important information with villages and forest communities, fostering an inclusive approach to forest conservation.
In May this year, PoM members took part in a series of capacity building workshops, addressing important topics such as financial literacy, sexual harassment and violence against women and children. The sessions offered valuable insights and practical advice, helping to empower members and equip them with useful tools and knowledge.
